Bonilla Headed to Arizona to Assist Heat SC Head Coach John Powell at Collegiate Level

Laredo, TX (Friday, January 15, 2021) – For Coach Roger Bonilla, the grass just got greener on the other side.

Bonilla, a former TAMIU soccer player and recent graduate of the University has accepted a position as the Men’s Soccer Assistant Coach (1st Assistant) at Arizona Christian University (Glendale, AZ), an NAIA school that competes in the Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC).

Coach Roger has honed his coaching skills as an Assistant Coach with the Heat’s NPSL team in 2019 (and the 2020 suspended season) as well as a Head Coach for the Heat’s Boys Under 17’s and Assistant Coach for the Heat’s United Premier Soccer League’s (UPSL) squad.

Coach Bonilla will be joining the Heat SC’s (NPSL) Head Man John Powell that serves as the Head Coach for the Arizona Christian University Firestorm’s Soccer Team.

“I am blessed to have the opportunity to bring in a coach of Roger’s quality in my first year as the Head Coach at Arizona Christian University. He immediately impacts and improves the coaching staff, program, and the University. His drive, passion for the game, and ability to built effective relationships is ultimately going to see him succeed here at ACU, I could not be more excited to continue to work alongside Coach Bonilla”, said Firestorm’s Head Coach John Powell.

“Having coached with Roger for the past three summers in Laredo and with the Heat organization throughout the past few years, I know firsthand the type of person and coach he is”.
Powell concluded, “His internal drive and commitment to excellence were two of the main factors that led me to recruit him to join my staff at ACU. Roger is a young and talented coach with an extremely bright future, this is a fantastic step towards achieving our goals for the Arizona Christian Men’s Soccer Program”.

Added Bonilla, “It was an honor working with the Heat Youth Club and the young men and their parents not because of what I may have taught them but from what I learned from them, thank you for allowing me to coach your talented players and I want them each to know that every single one of them has a bright future ahead of them, on and off the field”.

“In addition, working with Coach Powell over the past three summers with the Heat Senior Team and the entire Heat administration allowed me to have this new adventure that I plan on taking advantage of in honing my coaching and relationship skills, I am really looking forward to the hard work and fruits it will bring to me professionally”.

“I hope this group (U17 Boys) can stay together and that our UPSL side can continue to strive to stay in shape and in game condition in order to be ready for the NSPL Summer Season, I will be back in the summer and I hope to see everyone then”, Coach Bonilla concluded.

The Laredo Heat Soccer Club is glad to have been a part of Coach Bonilla’s development as a soccer coach and that his experience has benefitted his chosen career. Laredo, TX (viernes 15 de enero de 2021) - Para el entrenador Roger Bonilla, el césped se volvió más verde en el otro lado.

Bonilla, un ex jugador de fútbol de TAMIU y recién graduado de la Universidad, aceptó un puesto como entrenador asistente (primer asistente) del equipo de fútbol masculino en la Universidad Cristiana de Arizona (Glendale, AZ), una escuela de la NAIA que compite en la Conferencia Atlética de Golden State (GSAC).

El entrenador Roger ha perfeccionado sus habilidades como entrenador asistente con el equipo NPSL del Heat en 2019 (y la temporada suspendida de 2020), así como entrenador en jefe del equipo masculino Sub 17 del Heat y entrenador asistente del equipo que participa en la United Premier Soccer League (UPSL) del Heat.

El entrenador Bonilla se unirá al entrenador en jefe del Heat SC (NPSL), John Powell, que se desempeña como entrenador en jefe del equipo de fútbol de Arizona Christian University Firestorm.

“Tengo la suerte de tener la oportunidad de traer a un entrenador de la calidad de Roger en mi primer año como entrenador en jefe en la Universidad Cristiana de Arizona. Inmediatamente impacta y mejora al cuerpo técnico, el programa y la Universidad. “Habiendo entrenado con Roger durante los últimos tres veranos en Laredo y con la organización del Heat durante los últimos años, sé de primera mano el tipo de persona y entrenador que es”.
Powell concluyó: “Su impulso interno y compromiso con la excelencia fueron dos de los principales factores que me llevaron a reclutarlo para que se uniera a mi personal en ACU. Roger es un entrenador joven y talentoso con un futuro muy brillante, este es un paso fantástico hacia el logro de nuestras metas para el programa de fútbol masculino cristiano de Arizona ".

Bonilla agregó: “Fue un honor trabajar con el Heat Youth Club y los jóvenes y sus padres, no por lo que pude haberles enseñado sino por lo que aprendí de ellos, gracias por permitirme entrenar a sus talentosos jugadores y a mí. queremos que cada uno sepa que cada uno de ellos tiene un futuro brillante por delante, dentro y fuera del campo”.

“Además, trabajar con el entrenador Powell durante los últimos tres veranos con el Heat Senior Team y toda la administración del Heat me permitió tener esta nueva aventura que planeo aprovechar para perfeccionar mis habilidades de entrenamiento y relaciones, el trabajo duro y los frutos que me traerá profesionalmente”.

“Espero que este grupo (varones sub-17) pueda permanecer unido y que nuestro lado UPSL pueda continuar esforzándose por mantenerse en forma y en condiciones de juego para estar listo para la temporada de verano de NSPL. Volveré en el verano y espero a ver a todos entonces”, concluyó el entrenador Bonilla.
