UNLV Defender Brings Experience, Bright Future to Laredo

Laredo, TX (Friday, March 26, 2021) – With the 2021 National Premier Soccer League Season just around the corner, the Laredo Heat continue their mission of bringing quality players to the Gateway City to have best product on the field.

The addition of Defender Gabriel Claudio, a current standout at the University of Nevada – Las Vegas is no exception to the use of the word quality, on and off the pitch.

“Gabriel is a top player that I have been following for over three years. I was trying very hard to bring him with me at the collegiate level, but he landed at a top NCAA D-I program, UNLV”, said Heat Coach John Powell.

“I consider us very fortunate to sign a player of Gabriel’s quality onto our roster, he adds a level of experience, athleticism and quality that is hard to find. We can’t wait to see what he does this summer in Laredo”, concluded Powell.

Claudio, from Yuma AZ is 6-3 junior defender for the Rebels that transferred to UNLV from junior college powerhouse Yavapai College where he led the Rough Riders to a 15-4 record and a conference title in 2019 earned Region Player of the Year Runner-Up honors as well as being named to the first team All-NJCAA All-Region team as he anchored a backline that recorded ten shutouts and a 0.61 GAA (goals against average)…he also scored four goals and added a pair of assist for the season as a defender.

While at Cibola HS in AZ, Claudio, an all-around athlete, not only played soccer but also spent two seasons on the high school football team, playing kicker, free safety, and wide receiver, earning City Player of the Year recognition and first team All-State honors as a junior in 2017 after setting every major receiving and touchdown record in Yuma County history.

Laredo, TX (viernes 26 de marzo de 2021) - Con la temporada de la National Premier Soccer League 2021 a la vuelta de la esquina, el Laredo Heat continúa su misión de traer jugadores de calidad a Gateway City para tener el mejor producto en el campo.

La incorporación del defensor Gabriel Claudio, un jugador destacado de la Universidad de Nevada - Las Vegas no es una excepción al uso de la palabra calidad, dentro y fuera del campo.

“Gabriel es un jugador de primer nivel al que he estado siguiendo durante más de tres años. Me esforcé mucho para traerlo conmigo a nivel universitario, pero aterrizó en un programa superior de la NCAA D-I, UNLV”, dijo el entrenador del Heat, John Powell.

“Me considero muy afortunado de fichar a un jugador de la calidad de Gabriel en nuestra lista, él agrega un nivel de experiencia, atletismo y calidad que es difícil de encontrar. Estamos ansiosos por ver qué hace este verano en Laredo”, concluyó Powell.

Claudio, de Yuma AZ, es un defensor junior de 6-3 para los Rebels que se transfirió a la UNLV desde la potencia de la universidad junior Yavapai College, donde llevó a los Rough Riders a un récord de 15-4 y un título de conferencia en 2019 ganó como Jugador Regional del Año Honores, además de ser nombrado para el primer equipo All-NJCAA All-Region, ya que ancló una línea de fondo que registró diez blanqueadas y un GAA de 0.61 (goles contra el promedio) ... también anotó cuatro goles y agregó un par de asistencias para la temporada como defensor.

Mientras estaba en Cibola HS en AZ, Claudio, un atleta completo, no solo jugó fútbol, sino que también pasó dos temporadas en el equipo de fútbol americano de la escuela secundaria, jugando pateador, seguridad libre y receptor abierto, ganando el reconocimiento de Jugador del Año de la Ciudad y el primer equipo All-State con honores como junior en 2017 después de establecer todos los récords importantes de recepción y anotación en la historia del condado de Yuma.
