In pursuit of the goal of having as much local talent represented as possible, the Laredo Heat SC is preparing to host open tryouts for its National Premier Soccer League team for the 2022 season.

The tryouts will be held from 7-9 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 25 at the TAMIU Soccer Complex, and registration begins at 6 p.m. Registration is also available online at tinyurl.com/laredoheat2022.

Participation is free and open to the public, and any players under 18 will need a signature from a parent on their waiver. Players trying out should wear a white T-shirt, white socks, cleats and shin guards. A few players will be selected from the Friday tryouts to return for another session on Saturday morning.

The Heat featured a bevy of homegrown talent last season as Jorge “Koke” Mares, Elias Perales, Johan Portales and Jose Rivera all earned playing time while the roster also featured several other local players. The club is aiming to continue that trend with the upcoming open tryouts.

“One of our primary goals is to grow and support the local soccer talent, so we would love to find players to join our NPSL roster through these tryouts,” Laredo Heat SC President Shashi Vaswani said. “It has been great seeing Laredo athletes contribute to the success of our NPSL team, and the more we can achieve that goal the better.”

With those local players contributing last season, the Heat finished 7-1-2 in the 2021 regular season with the No. 1 defense and No. 2 offense in the Lone Star Conference as they allowed only 10 goals while scoring 27. Laredo posted five clean sheets including four in a span of five games as they advanced to the Lone Star Conference championship game.
