U.S. Soccer Announce 2019 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Format and Schedule

First Round Kicks Off on May 7th / 8th, Laredo Earns Entry Due to Strong 2018 NPSL Season

Laredo, TX (Thursday, January 31, 2019) – The United States Soccer Federation (U.S. Soccer) has finalized the format and schedule for the 106th Edition of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, U.S. Soccer’s National Championship. The 2019 tournament kicks off May 7th & 8, 2019 with 19 First Round games and features a total of 84 teams from all levels, culminating in August with America’s soccer champion lifting the Open Cup trophy after eight rounds of single-elimination play.

The Houston Dynamo of Major League Soccer (MLS) are the defending Open Cup Champions, having earned the club’s first tournament title with a 3 – 0 victory over the Philadelphia Union, also an MLS side.

The Laredo Heat will be participating in this year’s U.S. Open Cup due to its strong showing during the 2018 National Premier Soccer League’s (NPSL) Season. The Heat will be one of 14 teams from the NPSL entering the First Round along with AFC Ann Arbor (Michigan), Duluth FC (Minnesota), El Farolito (California), Erie Commodores FC (Pennsylvania), FC Baltimore (Maryland), FC Motown (New Jersey), FCM Portland (Oregon), Little Rock Rangers (Arkansas), Miami FC (Florida), Midland-Odessa Sockers (Texas), New York Cosmos B (New York), Orange County FC (California) and Philadelphia Lone Star FC (Pennsylvania).

The Heat’s First Round opponent, play date (either Tuesday, May 7th or Wednesday, May 8th) and venue will be announced by U.S. Soccer on April 10, 2019.

“This is very exciting news for the club, to qualify for the U.S. Open Cup in our first year back after our two-year hiatus speaks volumes about the players that played for us last year and to the job that Coach Dana Taylor and his staff did to get us into this position; and it will be a great way to start the 2019 season as the opening round game of the Cup will be our first competitive game of 2019”, said Heat Owner Shashi Vaswani.

“Coach Aidan Davison, his staff and our players, along with our Technical Director, Coach Dana Taylor will get a real opportunity to see where they stand as a team prior to the start of the NPSL Season since any team that our team faces in the first round will be a quality soccer club”.

Vaswani concluded, “We will be looking forward to the announcement on April 10th from U.S. Soccer to see what team we will face and where, hopefully, that game will be in Laredo as I can promise we will definitely be submitting our proposal to host”.

Laredo Heat U.S. Open Cup History

In 2014, the Heat had their best run in of the Open Cup competition as they made it all the way into the 4th Round to face the Houston Dynamo of the MLS. The Gateway City Club played at BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston and gave the MLS side a run for their money by playing the entire 90 minutes and only losing 1 – 0. This coming 2019, the Heat are looking forward to making some noise again, stay tuned.

In its 106th year, the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup – U.S. Soccer’s National Championship – has crowned a champion annually since 1914. The history-filled tournament is conducted on a single-game, knockout basis and open to all professional and amateur teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer. In 1999, the competition was renamed to honor United States soccer pioneer Lamar Hunt.

Laredo, TX (Jueves 31 de enero de 2019) - La Federación de Fútbol de los Estados Unidos (U.S. Soccer) ha finalizado el formato y el calendario de la 106ª edición de la Copa Abierta de los Estados Unidos Lamar Hunt, Campeonato Nacional de Fútbol de los Estados Unidos. El torneo de 2019 comienza el 7 y 8 de mayo de 2019 con 19 juegos de Primera Ronda y cuenta con un total de 84 equipos de todos los niveles, que culminaron en agosto con el campeón de fútbol de Estados Unidos levantando el trofeo de la Copa Abierta después de ocho rondas de juego de eliminación simple.

El Houston Dynamo de la Major League Soccer (MLS) son los campeones defensores de la Open Cup, habiendo ganado el primer título de torneo del club con una victoria por 3-0 sobre Philadelphia Union, también parte de la MLS.

Historia de Laredo Heat en U.S. Open Cup

En 2014, Heat tuvo su mejor racha en la competencia de la Copa Abierta, ya que llegaron a la 4ta Ronda para enfrentar al Houston Dynamo de la MLS. El club jugó en el estadio BBVA Compass en Houston y le dió a la MLS una carrera por su dinero al jugar los 90 minutos completos y solo perdiendo 1 - 0. Este próximo 2019, el Heat espera hacer algo de ruido nuevamente, esté al pendiente.
